Nice Road Bike + South Salt Lake =

So Kathryn has a nice expensive road bike that she loves very much. Since it sits at work all day until she rides it home, I made her buy a "too expensive" U-lock to augment her cable lock's puny defenses.

Well a couple nights ago we heard some clicking on the metal bars on our p?ublicly accessible balcony. By the time I opened the door to check if someone was messing with her bike, there wasn't a soul in sight. I saw the bike and the U-lock looking just fine so I closed the door thinking I'd imagined it. In the light of the next morning we saw this near her bike:
