1st anniversary

This Saturday, April 6, we had our first anniversary.  The week preceding was long and tiring so we started the day off by sleeping in late and eating a tasty homemade omelet breakfast.   Then we had planned to take the advice of one of our hiking guide books that said that Dougnut falls was a good hike during all seasons. Turned out the road wasn’t even open, so we tried two other hikes nearby which were also both snow covered.  The book didn’t mention good for all seasons as long as you have snow shoes, lame.  But the drive through Big Cottonwood canyon was very pretty and instead of hiking we took our packed lunch to a nearby park and played around with a soccer ball so Nate could show off.

When we got back home we exchanged gifts.  I informed Nathan a few weeks ago that every anniversary year has a different material that is tradition to give, starting with paper.  Usually people give stationary or tickets to something, but I didn’t want to be boring so I gave Nate a piñata filled with a card game, some candy and my card.  I made him take it outside, tie it to the tree, and hit it with the closest thing we have to a bat in front of all the passing cars and some neighborhood children that found it amusing.

Nathan is a good listener <aha! Now it's online so she can never take that back!-Nathan> and when I told him I thought it would be awesome to learn to decorate cakes, like all fancy with fondant and everything. He remembered.  He got me a (paper) gift certificate to a beginning cake decorating class with a professional cake decorator here in SLC that teaches with marshmallow fondant. This is her website: http://www.saltcakecity.com/Cake_Classes.php  (I’m sure pictures are to come once I make my first cake in May).

After exchanging gifts we opened our time capsule from our wedding night where all of our wedding dinner guests wrote some advice/memories that we would open on our anniversary.  We’ve waited all this time and finally got to read it. One of our favorites was a well planned note from Nate's groomsman Phil. He had visited Utah a couple weeks ago and gave us a homemade wooden box with a combination lock on it. He claimed to have forgotten the combination but assured us he'd find it written down somewhere once he got back home. In fact, he'd written the combination on his note to us from a year ago and we only found it (and were able to open the box) when we read through our notes from the reception.

After that we got ready for our romantic evening out.  It started at the Roof Restaurant at temple square for some tasty lion house rolls and fancy food.  I knew we had somewhere to be by 7:30 but Nate wouldn’t tell me anything about his surprise.  We drove to Westminster College and I still had no idea what it was but then we walked into a play a couple minutes late. It looked like a Wild West melodrama, and since that’s not really Nate’s thing I was a little confused.   A couple minutes later it shows that the musical is based on a group of actors/singers in Boston.  The western scene was of them acting, like a play inside a play.  The musical, “Curtains” was a cute little murder mystery, and endearing mostly because of its location. <"Did I mention that I LOVE Boston!"-Kathryn...-Nathan in his girl voice>

After the play Nate revealed his big secret- we were staying in the Anniversary Inn in a room themed “Cape Cod”.  He had tricked me in to believing we were just going to stay at home for the night, but had secretly packed me a bag and checked in to our hotel before dinner.  TRICKY,  TRICKY! <Translation: smooth smooth-Nathan> The room was amazing and fit perfectly with the Boston theme. (Can you tell we are exciting about our big upcoming move?) We once again got to sleep in Sunday morning, have breakfast in bed, and watch the first session of general conference before going home.
