Everyone Wants to go to Med School, not Ethiopia

Nathan: My sister, Brooke, came to visit last week (actually for a wedding in St. George but we just pretend she came to visit us). We went to St.George with her and some of her friends for the weekend to party at my parents' house. I drove on the way down while Kathryn took shotgun and we made Brooke's friends sit in the back of our tiny Nissan (super nice, I know). One of Brooke's friends is an amusing traveling companion. He knows everything  about the Catholic church so we talked about the new Pope for half the trip <He's Argentine!! -Kathryn>. My favorite part was how he later disclosed to Brooke that he was silently horrified that Kathryn neglected her seatbelt the entire ride down.

Highlights from the trip include expired food, even worse McDonalds <One of my favorite fast food restaurants, I'm not ashamed to admit. This was the first time I've gotten him to go since we met, and he basically cried like a baby- Kathryn>, going to the St. George temple for the first time, watching an acapella movie that didn't suck (Pitch Perfect).<and by didn't suck Nate means he LOVED it- Kathryn> and watching Llizi swim more in the pool.

Kathryn: After the vacation, Nate had a long week at school with two midterms, and a big paper and presentation due. School's finishing up a month from now and I'm excited it will be over, but usually the last month is the hardest yet most important.  To relax a little over the weekend, we went down to Provo for a party with my cousins, hosted by Rachel. It's been a long time since we've gotten together so it was good to catch up and we are still talking about the amazing strawberry shortcake.  Here is her post about the evening: http://rebarzee.blogspot.com/2013/03/crandall-cousin-party.html  (2 med school applicants attended)

After that we made an appearance at a b-day party for a friend from Nathan's stake (4 med school applicants attended) Then visited his old roomie (applying for Optometry School).  We were excited to be doing something on a friday night, because usually we are lame and just chill by ourselves.  On the way home there was a random snow storm that got super thick for about 10 minutes and we skidded across five lanes of traffic without dying.  Let's just say, I put my seatbelt on afterward <you know it's serious when Kathryn results to this! -Nathan>

We figured out there are 362,880
combinations of bites we could eat!
Today we went on a field trip with Nathan's Intercultural Outreach class at BYU.  (1 medical school applicant attended). It was a religious tour of the SLC Krishna Temple, a cathedral, and a Muslim mosque in Taylorsville.  With intermissions at an ethiopian restaurant and Bruge, a Belgian place with waffles and fries.  We got to watch an offering at the Krishna Temple and do some yoga.  Nathan got me to laugh during the breathing exercises, so that was awkward.  The ethiopian restaurant was interesting<translation: gross -Nathan>, we got platters to share between us with 9 different meat and veggie dips to dip your pancakes in (utensil-less).  It was interesting but I can't say we loved it.  I outed Nate on hating it after he said he was full after taking about 4 bites.  The waffles and fries however were incredible, I got a cinnamon waffle that tasted a lot like a cinnamon roll.

The Mosque in SLC
The nice man showing us around the mosque pointed out that it is the lack of seeking knowledge about different cultures and religions that causes the misconceptions.  And that there are misconceptions about  Muslims, Mormons, and other religions alike.  I know I don't appreciate false information out there about my religion, so we were glad to learn more about other religions and hopefully not contribute to offensive misconceptions in the future.  Nate and I discussed afterward how many similarities there are from all religions to our own and how each religion has parts of the gospel.  For example, we learned that the Krishna consciousness devotees don't consume coffee or alcohol.  We can learn from many people devoted to their religion about faith and love of God.

Classic Kathryn and Nate move- locked our keys in the car and luckily Laura saved us, thanks sis!

Yes, in the past 24 hours we have seen 7 medical school applicants, (8 if optometry school counts).  Welcome to BYU!

Also, I heard this song on the radio, shazam-ed it and have listened to it like 20 times since...
